Fall into some great bookish adventures this September

There’s something very exciting about September. Bunches of freshly sharpened pencils, trees turning golden and the fresh crop of books too of course! Aah then there’s the promise of colder weather, roaring fires….and wrapping up warm reading….a true booklover’s delight!

Of course, the holidays might be over for another year which isn’t so good. BUT when you can go on a literary holiday anytime you feel like it, September is also the ideal time to start travelling BookTrail style..

England – Winchester – A Single Threads by Tracy Chevalier

Tracy always brings a unique sense of time and place to her novels as well as intricate historical research and this is no different. Part fact and fiction, she weaves a story around the women of Winchester who stitched prayer mats and more during the war. A really fascinating insight into a dark period of history and a glorious tapestry of a sense of community and human spirit.

Beautifully woven – a must read! And if you go to Winchester cathedral where it’s set this would be especially amazing as you can see the items created during the course of the novel.

England – Whitby – The Wayward Girls – Amanda Mason

The locations might be vague and fictional in this novel but it’s no less scary. The setting of the old and crumbly house is just perfect and wait until you hear about the Wayward girls! There’s some very scary scenes here….the book arrived with a bag of marbles….that’s a clue to one of the creepiest parts of the book. Top tip – do not read this book whilst babysitting having given said marbles to the real life children……..

USA – New York City – Elevator Pitch – Linwood Barclay

Oh dear goodness. If you are nervous AT ALL about taking lifts/elevators in tall buildings, then take care when reading this novel as you may never step inside one again. This takes the most basic of fears and turns it into something deadly. A total ride for your reading senses! This book is bound to be responsible for many people losing weight after the holiday excesses as they’ll be taking the stairs from now on!

Paris, Prague and Berlin – The Museum of Broken Promises by Elizabeth Buchanan

The Museum of Broken Promises is a fascinating place – a fictional place too but one inspired by the Museum of Communism in Prague. The author says that that one visit sparked the idea and feel for the entire novel.
