When a Great Book Series Ends

When there is a book series you love, the more books the merrier, right? But – when that series comes to an end, it’s always sad. And for Edward Marstons’ The Railway Detective, that time has arrived.

The series has reached 25 adventures and since they all involve train journeys up and down the UK, they have featured heavily on TheBookTrails. Books set on a train anyone?

This is the latest fine edition:

Why this is a great series

Unique Victorian Setting: Set in the 1850s and 1860s, you get to see the rail network rapidly expand across the country. It’s like going back in time to witness the massive industrial and social transformation taking place. Time gone by!

Trains!

The author’s background is in steam engineering so you know you’re going to get some very insightful detail and facts about trains, steam engines and railway stations when they had porters.

Trains

One of the best Detectives there is!

Detective Inspector Robert Colbeck of Scotland Yard has to be one of the best and most interesting character in a book. Take his Sergeant, Victor Leeming and you have one of the most dynamic duos there is.

You can smell the trains and see the locations so clearly!

Many of the crimes take place on train stations or in trains. This way you get to see how it used to be – when trains had compartments and platforms had porters is like stepping back in time. Just wonderful, I can lose myself there for ages!

Not just about trains and golden age crime

Colbeck’s romance with railway engineer’s daughter Madeleine Andrews gives the stories and series a really nice warm touch

I’m going to miss this series. But it stands proud on my shelves. I can smell the steam and the engine oil from here.
