The Maiden set in Edinburgh – Kate Foster

  • Submitted: 7th February 2023

This is a remarkable story. It really happened. The author has takena real life situation and then created a fictional account of what she thinks could have happened. She has given a voice to a woman accused of murder. She has given a voice to a group of women abused and controlled by one man.

It’s quite the tale…..

I loved this one! Great writing and fantastically life sized characters. Despite the awful crime which takes place in the book, the novel is quite witty and bawdy with it. It reminded me of Dickens, The Fingersmith and the likes with its language, smut and poverty. There’s a poor house, whore house and then there’s a mansion on a hill where the rich man lives. That’s where the trouble lies.

The entire novel is set in Edinburgh and in Corstophine where there used to be a castle. it’s in this castle that our baddie lives and where the murder happens. The blurb tells you that this is the crime since it’s based on a real life situation. Kate has brougnt it to life so to speak, given Christian, the woman who is said to have killed her lover, a voice. And what a voice it is. What voices do all these people have.

It would make a great play or film. Full of rich scenery, atmosphere and dripping with bawdy menace. I loved it!
