Spitting Gold – Carmella Lowkis

Ghostly LGBTQ+ novel set in PARIS.

Good sister, bad sister – one last con

I mean what a blurb that is!

Set in Paris,  we meet a bunch of dysfunctional aristocrats who believe they are haunted by their great aunt, brutally murdered during the French Revolution.

Sylvie and Charlotte will need to deploy every trick to terrify the family out of their gold. But then the tables seem to turn, and the sister find themselves at the mercy of the spirits they pretend to rouse

A novel to transport you to Paris and its spiritual rooms

Gothic Paris always draws me in. Add a bit of other worldly activity such as spiritualism and seances then you have me scared but reading it all the same!

Two sisters, one good, one bad says the blurb. Two from very different backgrounds who are involved in the world of the spirits. One sister is a Baroness and they both work to trick people into attending spiritual meetings to talk to their dead relatives. They are masters at what they do, until the spirits seem to want to turn the tables and contact the sisters themselves.

The world building here is gothic and chilling – Paris is the perfect place for a story like this. There are twinkling lights in the dark, narrow streets and dark corners. Two sisters, spirit mediums and that line between rich dysfunctional aristocrats and those who work to con them. This was dark, unsettling and I honestly didn’t know what to believe.  Charlotte or Sylvie – they take it in turns to have their say and I was back and forth trying to read between the lines. I liked one sister more than the other, believed one more than the other but together they were quite the team!

I did think it had a few Sarah Waters vibes with the setting, tone and sapphic romance with twists and danger. The same story told first by one person and then the other is not one I have read much of in novels.

The cover is striking and there’s a lot of gold within.
