Book Memories – Why a Book Stays with Me

Book Memories

Oh there are some books that sit on the shelves of your memory library – and this is one of them that has stayed with me ever since I read it. Why? It’s a great story, it’s very atmospheric and very compelling but it’s also a book that I immediately wanted to read again straight after. I missed the characters and the world building within.

Why it really left an impression with me is that I struggle with Greek myth retellings sometimes and thought this, a retelling of the myth of the Minotaur, I did wonder if it would be my cup of tea. Well, it was.

It was a pleasure to meet ten year old Nell and learn about the art of mudlarking! I wanted to go and try it for myself when I’d read about it. The entire cast of characters was like something out of a Dickens novel. Quite apt when the setting was Victorian London.

But the Minotaur himself was what really drew me in. This figure from Greek mythology transplanted to what is essentially Dickensian London where there is another underworld living via the river. The old tale of what makes a man a monster weaves its way through the novel and ebbs and flows like the river itself. It’s a very powerful tale, well paced and utterly captivating.

Magical realism can really shine when it’s done well and this is one of those times. What is myth and what is reality? Is Minos the man a Minotaur or a Monster at heart?
