Historical novel set in Florence and Venice
Carnival of Lies – D V Bishop
If you haven’t read the Cesare Aldo novels yet, get to it as you are missing out!
This is the fifth in the series but you can read it as a standalone. However, like with any good series, you get so much more out if it if you read from the start.

I love this series with a passion. So much so that whenever someone asks me about historical fiction, I say ooh well….and launch into an ‘ I Love Cesare Aldo’ speech. I’d like to think I have helped sell a few copies over the years. Anyway, back to the review…
Cesare Aldo has left the Otto so this is a bit different for him. He’s now no longer in the police but is sort of a PI. It’s all to to with protecting a Duke whose missing journal is full of explosive secrets. Now with intrigue like that, I dived in straight away and was not disappointed. This is one of the most immersive series ever and as I read, I was reminded of the sights, smells and noises from previous novels as I was led down the streets of this one.
This was the best yet I thought. The intrigue, the drama.. on another level. I just loved Aldo’s powers of observation and his new found freedom. He’s not afraid to face the truth and honestly it’s like Sherlock Holmes mixed with James Bond, with tights and funny shoes. Brilliantly done. This HAS to be on TV. It just has to be!
David, no pressure, but I really need book six!
