This novel transports you to Hvar, Croatia.

What a wonderful way to discover Croatia. It’s not a country that is often first choice on the tourist trail but I think that will change after this book. Isabelle Broom has created such a wonderful travel experience in this novel that you will want to go yourself for real.

Most of the novel is set in Hvar which is the main town and tourist attraction but there’s plenty of sailing and exploring the archipelago by boat! A boat with a rather nice man it has to be said…..

Isabelle conjures up the magic and charm of Croatia, the blue water, the cobbled streets, the wonderful wildlife and more. Croatia is a major character in this novel!

Short plot:

Kate heads to Croatia to escape her own life but meets someone who is renovating a hotel and boat. She joins him on several visits to the islands, explores on her own and even manages to befriend a stray cat. You really get to see the culture, landscape in this novel. Plus, there’s plenty of food and drink references to enjoy too.

The story is a great one. Girl goes to escape a breakup but ends up getting entangled in the place she’s escaped to. That’s just the start of the story as there are some very fine twists and heartfelt emotions in this story.

It has all the classic ingredients of an Isabelle Broom novel – pure escapism, a character you go on a personal journey with as well as geographical one, a  story of mixed emotions and a large dollop of funny British humour, cultural misunderstandings and mystery or suspense. I love the way Isabelle’s energy and passion for what she writes about, both the characters and the settings, come across loud and clear. The Getaway is particularly gripping and relevant to our lives right now; we all want to escape our lives at the moment, don’t we?

Oh I felt for Kate! A bit of a Bridget Jones situation causes her to flee where we follow her heartbreak and embarrassment. She ends up visiting her brother in Croatia and there she meets someone very interesting…

I loved the mystery, the backstory and Kate seemed very honest and raw. She’s very good at interior design and it’s great to learn about this, how she helps him design and decorate her brother’s hostel. The hostel takes on a new life and it was lovely to see her work and get to know this man called Alex. Hmm Alex, he was an interesting one….he lives on a boat first of all. Oh the ‘scenes’ when the reader gets to sail around the Croatian islands with him! He’s a bit of a loner, a wanderer and the buzz between them starts to grow in the most unexpected of ways

Isabelle weaves a lovely story that it’s impossible not to get invested in. There were serious themes as well as light-hearted ones – like life itself. The overall effect is one very well-written and immersive, compelling literary escape.
