The Edinburgh Nights series
The Edinburgh Nights series
There’s a series of books out there that showcase Edinburgh in the most unique of ways! Never mind your tours of the old town and the stunning parks of the new town….here we go underground to the magical establishments hidden in plain sight….
The world is that of a post-apocalyptic Edinburgh.
Fourteen-year-old Ropa Moyo has dropped out of school to become a ghostalker. She now speaks to Edinburgh’s dead, by carrying messages to the living.
It’s not long before a ghost asks her for help. Nicola Stuart implores Ropa to find her son, Ollie, who went missing before she died. Ropa is not keen to help at first but then she finds out about other children who have seemingly disappeared in the same way….
Oh to visit the Library of the Dead for real!!

This series is particularly magical and fantastical as it weaves in Zimbabwean magical traditions as well as Western occultism . Add to that a dystopian Scottish setting and you have quite the literary landscape!

Edinburgh hospital
Priya works at Our Lady of Mysterious Maladies where a new illness is resisting magical and medical remedies ……Ropa goes to work here and finds something she would have rather not.

Dunvegan Castle = location map
Ropa Moyo is thrilled to attend a magical convention at Dunvegan Castle, on the Isle of Skye, where she’ll rub elbows with eminent magicians. But then there’s a murder and a precious scroll stolen….

Arniston House – location map
Ropa still wants to be a magician, can speak to the dead, but has officially given up being an intern at the Society of Sceptical Enquirers. Leaving Scottish magic behind, she now works for the English Sorcerer Royal.

Secrets of the First School – location map
Ropa is dead, banished to the Other Place by a reanimated spirit. She must find a way to escape, save her sister and gather allies across the country before Edinburgh falls.
So, if you’re looking for a series to really dig into and put some sparkle and magic into the long dark nights then this is it!
