It’s the wartime locations that are under the spotlight today – her new novel Small Acts of Resistance is out soon. The Return is also set in wartime – this time in England. The Return looked at the way farms and rural families kept the country going during wartime and it was a very atmospheric read.

Small Acts of Resistance is a novel that shimmers quietly. It is set in France when a plane crashes and the injured pilot tries to hide out in a farmhouse. The Germans are roaming all over the countryside and fear is high that there will be that knock at the door…then what happens to the family who will be taken away or punished in some way for harbouring the pilot?

My heart was wrenched out of my throat during this novel. What must it have been like to have had to allow German soldiers to live with you during war time. Would I have been brave enough to also hide a pilot they thought was MIA? So many emotional pulls and questions to consider here that I was honestly torn reading this. I thought the lines would have been black and white….but there are various shades in between. A skilled author takes you there and makes you care for both sides!
