This story looks at the Singer factory strike that took place in 1911. The strike involved more than 10 thousand workers fighting for better pay and conditions. It was quite the scandal at the time so to be able to get into true history as well as the fictional one is a special experience.

Sewing is relaxing for many and a lot of people still have a Singer sewing machine to this day. A story about such an institution is like stepping back into the past. The story is also set years later in 1954 where a woman sits with her sewing machine making things for her family. Through what she makes, the story unfolds and each scrap of fabric reveals a new secret. The third set of stitches which creates the story comes from Fred in 2016 who finds a Singer machine when clearing out his Grandfather’s flat.

This novel is delightful for a weekend read as it combines relaxing pastimes whilst showcasing the intricacies of both life and sewing stitches. The parallels between the two are striking – delicate and interwoven, one small step towards something greater and the details of the tapestry of life.

The passing of needlework skills from one generation to the next is the crux of this story and cleverly interwoven. As are details of the wonders of the sewing machine itself.

A really wonderful and intricate novel that needs to be wider read!
