Dutch Books on The BookTrail
Dutch Books on The BookTrail
Now, some of you might know that I am teaching myself Dutch. Just to be able to read it. I want to read books in another language and since I lived in Belgium once, I do have a good understanding of it but never really progressed it.
Well that is about to change. The way I learn a language is how a child does (explains a lot). I like to soak it in and absorb it naturally. I can’t learn from lists so have to draw or colour code things so it does look like a child is learning it! Heck, it works for me.
I recently bought some books in Dutch of authors I love in English. So I can read them, guess the words based on what I already know of the story and then learn them! It’s an odd way of doing it I suppose but it works for me. Much faster than doing in via grammar and academic books.
The books……………….
In the Blink of an Eye – Jo Callaghan
Now this is a book that I think is really going to read well in Dutch – it’s about AI and tech and Dutch is quite an exact language. Abrupt sentences and complex words so that I think it will suit this kind of story. I have actually started it and taking it in slowly and it’s proving to be very good so far…

In the Blink of an Eye in Dutch
A young child is sold to a wealthy family to become a handmaid.
Set in 19th-century China, this is a compelling story now about a slave girl and the daughter of a wealthy family. And how their two lives intertwine in the most unexpected of ways. The world that you learn about in this book is amazing and sad at the same time. Such a richly drawn world. I think it’s going to sound good in Dutch! I want to learn some of the words associated with this Chinese world and think this is a good way to do it.

The Lotus Shoes in Dutch
Another one I have…

Isabelle Broom The Getaway in Dutch
The Getaway
Romantic language and one that showcases landscapes and relationships. I love Isabelle’s easy to read style and this has been very helpful with my learning as well as having a good excuse to read a good book again. Not that I need one!
Happy language learning from books!
