When asked to write another book about a cruise, I came up with the idea of setting my characters on a Mediterranean cruise. I began by digging through my memory bank to find cherished moments of Mediterranean holidays. This was a delightful part of the research, and some of the destinations in The Cruise Club are inspired by places in my heart that hold a special place.

Many moments shaped this story, from the laughter-filled annual Greek holidays with girlfriends to the unforgettable experience of cruising as a guest speaker with Fred Olsen.
One destination stands out above all others. A small Greek village on a peninsula in a stunning bay at the end of a steep, winding road. Years ago, while exploring the island of Kefalonia, we stumbled upon this gem. What was meant to be a one-night stay turned into a longer adventure, and we found ourselves returning time and time again. In The Cruise Club, I’ve given the village the fictitious name Maxos, but many of you may recognise the place as Assos.

This village became even more magical because of the two brothers who owned a beach bar and a taverna by the harbour. Their kindness made every visit unforgettable. They called us the Ouzo Ladies. I’ll never forget how they’d head down the beach to the edge of the water, bringing trays of ouzo to us as we lounged in the sea.

Cruising the Mediterranean also brought special memories, and Ibiza was particularly magical. After walking miles in the Ibizan sunshine, I found myself at a pavement bar, savouring tapas and sangria. I don’t know why it felt so special, but surrounded by the vibrant energy of Ibiza, that delicious lunch stayed with me and found its way into the story.

Sailing through the Corinth Canal aboard a small cruise ship was nothing short of exhilarating. With what seemed like mere inches separating the ship’s hull from the canal walls, I held my breath along with everyone else. The Captain of the Braemar steered with masterful precision, threading us through the narrow passage. The tension and excitement were palpable, and I knew that if I felt it this deeply, my readers in The Cruise Club would too.

Cartegena has a rich history and as I explored the ancient streets and historical landmarks the city almost cast a spell. I could visualise my characters on an offshore excursion, visiting the imposing Roman theatre and walking along the centuries-old city walls. Every nook and cranny of ancient stone seemed to whisper stories of empires, battles, and cultural fusion. As I walked through the sun-drenched plazas of Cartegena, I saw my characters enjoying their day away from the ship. Along the busy harbour, street cafes and colourful shops brought the scene to life, I felt as though I had stepped back in time. The past was alive here, the history woven into the very fabric of daily life. It was the perfect stage, and I knew that my research in Cartegena would significantly enhance the story of The Cruise Club.

Through the characters in The Cruise Club, I hope that I celebrate the beauty of genuine friendship and everyday kindness. These qualities left a lasting impression on me during my Mediterranean cruise. As the sunlit days unfolded, it wasn’t just the breathtaking sunrise, landscapes and sunsets that stayed with me, but the laughter shared. Over dinners, excursions and relaxing days at sea, new acquaintances were formed. The warmth of connections among strangers. I’ve woven those moments into the narrative, hoping readers will be reminded of how simple acts of compassion can shape unforgettable experiences and, with luck, create a cracking read, too!
May The Cruise Club bring you as much pleasure as the memories of locations that inspired it. My thanks to The Book Trail and I wish you all wonderful holidays and many happy reading hours.
