A Game of Lies set in Wales – Clare Mackintosh

  • Submitted: 17th July 2023

I have been waiting for the latest Clare Mackintosh for forever. I LOVE this new series and am desperate to return to Wales and meet Ffion again.

This time we’re in a reality show being filmed in the Welsh mountains close to her home. It turns out however that the game show suddenly becomes a show from hell and one person goes missing.

BookTrail Travel to A Game of Lies

There’s something deliciously evil to have a reality TV show go horribly wrong. There’s lots of shows on TV in real life that we have either seen or heard of. Clare Mackintosh has jumped on this and then twisted it into a whole new horror show.

This is no ordinary reality show if there is such a thing. This one has a group of people living in the Welsh mountains on a farm. They are shielded from the outside world and their lives are on public display. The games begin, but then one person goes missing

Every show has its level of intrusion but this one has it in spades.  Detective Ffion Morgan is back again and  gets stuck right in. The jeopardy factor increases when they realise that every contestant has holding a secret that they don’t want to divulge. If they do, they lose the show. Now the missing person is even more of a cause for concern. It could change things a lot – who had the most to lose by losing?

The author has recreated such a fascinating landscape here – a game show set in the middle of nowhere. Rugged, rural and remote. Dangerous and wild. The space, the isolation of it all but also the eyes of the TV world on it make for a very unique setting. I loved that the setting had a mix of isolation  but with the attention of the world on it at the same time.

This is book two in a series and I would read them in order as the character of Ffion is nicely developed. Love it all to be honest – the setting, premise, characters and suspense.
