Given the location: a place I haven’t been to and one I really want to, I wanted to read this straight away. Thank you to Bitter Lemon Press who just know what is good for The BookTrail! This is perhaps one of my favourite of their catalogue yet.

Locations in Mothers of Sorrow

This is so much more than a crime novel – it’s essentially about mothers and what they will do for their children. There are clues and insights into the Croatian culture and signs that the preference for boys is still quite the norm.

Scene setting – Split really is placed front and centre and it’s a wonderful advert for the city and its people despite the crime aspect! I was immersed in the aroma of its cuisine, the sound of its language, the nuances of the investigation and insight into society over the years.
