Verity – book and film

Always exciting when a book comes to life. I read the book recently. Haven’t seen the film yet as the ending is very different (why!) but it’s a novel I am thinking about long after reading.

It’s a good concept – a woman trapped in her own body. This woman used to be a top author and so needs someone to write to finish her series. A ghostwriter is hired and moves into her house.

You just know things are going to go wrong very quickly. A scene at the start of the book that jarred I must admit, soon became clear but it still seemed an odd way of getting two characters together (compared to the rest of the story)

The New York locations got fast and furious very quickly. It’s the hot and fast set up of a city that never sleeps, people walking fast, cars zipping past and the noise and chaos of a metropolis showcases the fast world of publishing.

Contrast that to the placid and remote area in Vermont (Filmed in Westchester NY in the film)Oh this house is amazing where Verity lives! It’s got huge windows and corridors and unlike any house you ever saw. Of course, its a retreat in real life – not for the characters in the book however!

The book is better than the film. There I said it. The ending is much better and the tension is much better too. The house is more stunning that I imagined 😉 and the locations and isolation are very nicely done.

Still don’t understand why the book and film had to change the way they did. Great in their own ways but the book is the one you should go for first.
