The Wolf Den set in Pompeii – Imagine going to Pompeii and witnessing life in the city before it’s destruction by Mount Vesuvius. It’s always somewhere I have wanted to go or take a time machine too – it would probably be too dangerous for a woman to stay for any length of time, and judging by what I’ve now read – I’m glad this visit was just via a book.

This is one stunning read. Quite a statement coming from someone who is not normally a fan of retellings or novels about Greek myths and stories. However, this book alone was enough to change my mind. This is a story that starts as one thing but which takes on a life of its own.

Amara (gorgeous name) is the girl we follow in the novel. Her father dies and she is then sold into slavery. The scenes in the brothel were not that descriptive thankfully but you get a good idea of the suffering this poor girl and those like her went through. This is the Wolf Den of the title. Such meaning and symbolism in that name. It’s very like a den – you hide here, men come to catch their prey, the females are that prey and it’s very claustrophobic. The scenes here are dark and dingy, cold and foreshadowed with danger at every turn. Amara wants to escape and no wonder. It’s a grim existence but she has the strength of character to fight her way out of that hell hole. Once outside, the sun and fresh air is a direct contrast to the darkness within Amara’s world.

What follows is a story of strength of character and an insight into life in Pompeii. The eruption of Mount Vesuvius is also wonderfully woven into the novel and this is like a history lesson but on a magical storytelling carpet.

There is just so much wonderful detail here. Did you know people wrote on walls and doors to pass messages onto each other? There’s golden nuggets of information like this throughout including sayings of the time. It’s like walking around Pompeii in a virtual reality simulation it feels that real.

Pompeii really has come back to life with this novel.
