A novel to transport you to Brighton

First of all, be warned. This novel will tear you apart but it does put you back together again. It hugs you and slaps you around the face. It smiles and it cries. I felt like an emotional wreck after reading it. Totally worth it!

That cover reminded me of 1970s decor. I remember seeing these ducks on many a relatives wall in old photos and they still make me smile. That made me feel warm and nostalgic even before I had opened the book!

The locations or should I say location – Shrubland in Brighton – is not that important. Suffice to say that this is a story about loneliness and the street is every street in every town up and down the country.

The women we meet – Ada, Birdie and  Jane  are so well drawn and delightful to meet. Birdie – you will need plenty of tissues when her story comes out. I wanted to jump inside the book and give that woman a hug, telling her she is not alone as she is about to have thousands of readers in her debt! Next we have Jane who has moved to Brighton with her daughter Frankie. Then we have Ada, who is an oncology doctor from Poland. There are some very sad scenes in this book and my throat caught many times! Some of the storylines hit a nerve and I wept a few tears. Tell you what, get this book as it will save a fortune in therapy!

How this author has made three fictional characters feel so real is, quite frankly, a miracle. I cared about them all and felt bereft when the book had finished. This book is more than a story, it’s an insight into a world of emotions, a world of female friendship and it’s just heartwarming on so many levels. The banter from the non British characters was in a league of its own. Oh and Connie and the mugs!

Too much to say without wanting to say anymore. One street – three women – so many layers.

I might have said Goodbye to Birdie Greenwing but I shall never forget her or her friends.
