MAEVA MONTH – Seis Cocodrilos – Pablo del Rio

Seis Cocodrilos – Pablo del Rio

The first in the MAEVA month of July is this fine thriller set between London, Sussex in the UK and Mundaka in the Basque country where there is really good surf apparently!

A book called Six Crocodiles intrigued me…so I read it for the title alone THEN I saw the motorbike on the cover going over the cliff. This was set to be unique!

What a title I thought = Six Crocodiles? And what about that cover? A motorbike going over a cliff? Two things that made me want to read this straight away.

I love novels like this. Ones that turn out to be unexpected, but unexpectedly good. There’s three very unique things that happen in three different locations and these all start off the novel’s threads that weave and create quite the picture.

In Sussex, a woman collects things from a beach when she sees a motorbike go over the edge of a cliff. In London, a strange ring turns up at a jewellers. Far away in a surfing hotspot in the Basque Country, there’s something weird unfolding….

That’s not all that was unusual about this novel – in a good way! – it’s written in both third person and first which messed with my head at first, but once I got into it – I loved it! A very clever way of getting inside and outside the head of those involved. I’ve not read a novel that mixes POVs quite like this, and certainly not in Spanish! There were a lot of viewpoints to enjoy too. some very broken and lost people in this novel.

The plot unravels at a good pace and it’s fairly complex which I enjoyed. I found it fascinating how these threads interweave and marry up. Didn’t see some of that coming! Themes of pain, the human soul and the extent to which people will go if pushed or have years of resentment.

Loved how the locations seemed so distinct yet revealed very interesting links. Just goes to show that it’s hard to really know what someone is thinking or what pain they have seen.
