MAEVA MONTH – Corazón en Silencio – Julio César Cano

  • Submitted: 17th July 2025

Corazón en silencio

Silent Heart – that’s how this noir thriller title translates. Part of a series about Inspector Monfort and the cases he comes across in the little Spanish town of Castellon in Valencia. Not on the tourist trail, but that’s what makes this series so appealing….

It goes to places you haven’t seen before….

A novel to transport you to Castellón de la Plana

This book appealed as I was intrigued to visit Castellon de la Plana where it’s set. Never heard of it and have certainly never visited. However, since it’s a real place and not on the tourist trail, I immediately started to go there via the book.

What a place! A small town with a lovely beach, sites for rare birds nearby and a huge gothic cathedral. Oh and the stunning surrounding countryside. Why have I not heard of this place. I really want to go there!! Oh hang on, there’s a murderer in the book who is bumping off foreign types. Just as well it’s fiction as I am heading here as soon as I can.

The setting is wonderful, unique and so unexpected. The crime, confusing and troublesome. Inspector Monfort is a unique man – he has his problems but is adept at sussing out characters very well. This reflects in the writing as all characters are well rounded, secretive and full of surprises.

what I really liked was the fact that as the crimes unfolded, I got a really good  insight into the character of the Inspector himself. Having a bit of relationship trouble it seems with judge Elvira Figueroa. But this just adds to the overall feel of the book. A bit of romance in a crime novel seems to make everything more realistic and horrifying somehow.

Love this series. I want to head to Castellon and buy them all from the local bookshop.
