Historical fiction set in Tibet
The Last of Earth – Deepa Anappara
Where are we going?
Tibet!
Not a place I bet many people have been before. The story takes us back to 1869, when the mountainous territory of Tibet is closed to foreigners. Now this is an infuriating obstacle to Europeans racing to expand their empires….tensions are high.

The setting:
Tibet is a high-altitude region in Asia known as the “Roof of the World,” currently an autonomous region of China, though historically it had periods of independence.
It’s capital is Lhasa. What a world to be in? Such a treacherous area, a difficult setting and a dangerous one at that for many reasons.

Key quote:
“The landscape was magnificent in its desolation. It mocked them with its sudden dips and rises and by altering its hues as a chameleon would so that no sooner had the eye settled on red then it appeared to be grey or purple.”
