This is a heartwarming story with a little heartbreak in there too. Chock full of emotion that’s for sure and a great premise; the title is a game show about all things French. Just the kind we need on our TV. How I wish it were real!

Back to the book however, and it’s this idea of a gameshow which really attracted me to the novel. I’ve been on a TV quiz (Specsavers crime awards) and it took me back! All the behind the scenes planning, the waiting around, the practice sessions, meeting the other contestants…and that’s all before the quiz itself. Ah they’re a lot of fun and this book captured it brilliantly! There’s a fun sense of travel hunts and treasure too which worked well and ramped up the enjoyment factor even more.

Biggie Smalls

Biggie Smalls

The French setting? Ah mais oui! This was parfait and inspired by a few places such as Nantes, the Muscadet region and more. Beatuofuly captured and evoked by Carol. And if that doesn’t get yoru taste buds going, there’s some delicious descriptions of food.

Carol’s writing is fun and fresh and aptly suited to her subject and themes. I laughed, cried and wanted to be in Bryony and Melinda’s gang. I didn’t think I would care for a dog in a novel but Biggie Smalls totally won me over! Cute is not the word. Not such good words to be said for Professor Potts but then there’s a good mix of characters to love and love not so much. It makes it much more fun and realistic.

The serious side of the novel is also deftly handled by Carol – Hannah is after all in France to try and find her sister and reunite her family. The theme of reality TV, social media and what we think of people in the limelight, how TV creates our view of the world all come into play. There’s a lot to like here and a darn good story.

Shades of lightness and darkness, humour, a stunning setting, interesting premise and the cutest dog in fiction. What’s not to like?
