The Island – French fiction – Jérôme Loubry

  • Submitted: 26th June 2026

L’Ile

A French novel purchased last month and a locked room thriller where a man goes to stay with his wife’s friends  – as they were with her when she died five years ago!

Destination

The island called Porquerolles – off the coast of Hyères, along the coast of the French Riviera. An island not far from the mainland but far enough to realise that you can’t get back if there’s a storm. You are stuck there…..

Review

A slow burn but wait until the end. Wait until you see how you get along with the characters on the island. Imagine your wife died and these people must know what happend.

The island is a locked room crime novel in French that was compelling and went off in directions I had no idea it would. A bit ‘ And  Then There Were None’ with a French twist and a thin line between reality and well, something else. How you feel returning to an island where your wife died? With the people you think know more? The characterisation here was crisp and spot on, the setting just perfect.

I enjoyed the journey this took me on. I may never want to go to that island in real life, but still, it’s the book that matters haha
