Map Monday – The Gowkaran Tree of Iran
Iran – A clever novel and one that’s particularly relevant given the news – this is a story that takes place in Iran spanning fifty years. There’s all kinds covered here – from politics and family, revolution and reconstruction, loss and love. And all told through the stories of twelve children who get lost one long-ago night inside a mysterious palace.

A complex and often complicated read but one that it feels good to have read. If you don’t enjoy magical realism be aware there is quite a lot in here. That can make it hard to follow events at time but the novel really shines when you look back at the whole story.
Iran is such a fascinating country and its history is particularly interesting. I was sad to learn that the translator has decided to stay anonymous. So much hope yet despair wrapped up in one book.
