The Place we Met

Why a Booktrail?

2000s: Lake Como is a magical getaway but can it provide answers and possibly love?

  • ISBN: 978-0718186685
  • Genre: Fiction, Romance

What you need to know before your trail

Lucy may have suffered her fair share of bad men, but now she has Pete. Finally, a man worth sharing her favourite place with, Lake Como. That’s if she can put mysterious phone calls and glamorous ex-girlfriends out of her mind.

Taggie is rushed off her feet, but distraction is exactly what she needs to forget why she fled England and the sadness she left behind. She certainly doesn’t have time for infuriating stranger Marco. A man is the last thing she needs right now.

Lucy and Taggie might not know it, but their lives are about to collide. The New Year might begin with fireworks – but how will it end?

Travel Guide

Lake Como

To find the secret beach where Taggie meets Marco, take the boat up from Como to Bellagio, head up the hill directly opposite the harbour and turn right at the top. Follow the road along until you pass a primary school (on your right), then take the narrow uphill pathway to the left. This will lead you up, then downwards again to the shore. You’ll know you’re in the right place when you see the cobbled stone walls on either side on the walkway.

From the centre of Como, follow the path along the western shore through the park and past the imposing war memorial to the Aero Club, which is where you’ll find all the ducks and seagulls that Taggie likes to feed every morning – and where she and Lucy later bump into each other. It’s a beautiful spot to take pictures, and you can watch the seaplanes coming in to land on the water.

To sample the George Clooney wine that Pete wanted to buy for Lucy, head to La Lanterna in Bellagio for a glass or two, plus a delicious tricolore salad (trust me, it’s incredible). Situated halfway up the cobbled shopping street in the heart of the town, it’s a great spot to people watch, and they also sell miniature bottles of limoncello that you can take home as gifts.

If you’re visiting the area during winter, do not miss the Como Christmas Market, which starts in Piazza Cavour and leads up the street towards the Cathedral. The lights, music and decorations alone are worth the trip, and there’s also an ice rink. When Taggie tried to skate around it, she ended up being crashed into by a tall, dark, sexy Italian man, so it’s got to be worth a shot!

Lastly, do as Pete and Lucy did and take the funicular from the eastern side of the shore up to Brunate, for views over the lake that will make any Instagram feed come alive with little red hearts. The café right next-door to the station does the best hot chocolate I have ever tasted – honestly, it was like a cup of pure melted heaven.

Booktrailer Review

Susan: @thebooktrailer

Ah Isabelle Bloom, you’ve done it again and painted such an evocative picture of a stunning landscape and place to dream. IT’s the ideal place to take your boyfriend so no wonder this is the plot here. A place to fall in love and possibly engaged! Oh I was swept up with it all even though you knew something was going to go wrong.

Taggie has escaped from London and Lucy is happily there but both of them find answers to questions, some of which they hadn’t even asked. This is no sloppy romance though but a novel that starts slow but wallows wondrously in the atmosphere of the place, before picking up the plot and twisting it a few times like the roads at the side of the lake…

Isabelle also gives her characters just enough emotional heartache and passion for us to care about them. Can I just say – I love Elsie! –  and the men, well, you just know there’s a nice image to be had there when you read!

The Place we met is a Bloom classic – evocative, dreamlike but with a dose of reality just large enough to make it ring true. A place I now need to meet for myself with book in hand to try some tasty morsel – I mean that salad and limoncello Isabelle sings the praises of!

Bellissimo!
