What you need to know before your trail

Officer Gunnhildur has recently been promoted from her post in rural Iceland to Reykjavík’s Serious Crime Unit.

Her first task is to  hunt down escaped convict Long Ommi, who has embarked on a spree of violent score-settling in and around the city.

She is also investigating the murder of a fitness guru very close to home.

When all this is going on, Iceland is undergoing a deep financial crisis, and so Gunnhildur finds that the highest levels of power are still very much corrupted but that now this corruption could even lead to murder.

Travel Guide

The village of Hvalvik is fictional yet the author mentions at the start of the book that he based much of it on Grindavik and the surrounding area for its atmosphere and geography. Other locations are real although he has taken a few liberties with the place names.

You can tell the author has a strong affinity to the country in the way he describes and has researched the setting and the financial setting on which much of the book is based.

Don’t let the sound of this put you off however as there is a lot of wit involved with it-

Going out for a minute Helgi, if Johnny Depp shows up, just ask him to get undressed and wait for me would you?”

The food also gets a nice mention – we were intrigued about skyr (a yogurt of sorts) and wanted both that and cereal when offered in the book.

Plenty of Icelandic interest to keep you busy including the Borganes  museum near to where some people in the novel are spotted: http://safnahus.is/
