Hoy, Orkney islands
Rackwick and Rackwick Bay: An isolated hamlet is a prime example of the island’s rugged character in the book. There are also many historic crofts around this region like those in the book.
The Old Man of Hoy (a 450-foot sea stack) and St John’s Head, are located here and show the extremes of the island’s landscape.
Lyness: There are several references to the island’s military heritage – noted here for its role in Scapa Flow during the World Wars.
