The greatest journey is the one you least expect…
Long before Dorothy visits Oz, her aunt, Emily Gale, sets off on her own unforgettable adventure much closer to home…
When news reaches Kansas that her beloved sister has tragically died, Emily Gale must become a mother overnight. Her sister’s orphaned child, Dorothy, desperately needs a home.
But Emily doubts her ability to fill her sister’s shoes; her life on the barren Kansas prairies is no place for a child.
On the unforgiving plains, Emily’s courage is endlessly tested. The prolonged drought and relentless dust storms threaten to destroy everything – including her home and her marriage.
Can Emily overcome her grief and let Dorothy heal her heart?
Oz
Where many of the locations are in the realms of your imagination, the story is set in Kansas and Chicago and these two places are well represented. There are many sites, especially in Kansas where you should go in order to get as close to the Emerald city as you can.
This is the story of Emily so before the story of the Yellow Brick Road. Who was she and where did she come from? From Chicago to Kansas and through real life events such as the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression. That’s before we get to the story of Oz…
The Wizard of Oz has been one of those stories that has lingered in the background of my childhood. It’s a classic tale and with the recent release of Wicked, this is very timely. I loved finding out about how Auntie Em and Dorothy came to be and the journey they go on. Literally and figuratively.
There were some very emotional moments in this story and real life events such as the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression so this really grounded the story and made the magic even more magical!
A lovely and poignant tale
