What you need to know before your trail

Summer has arrived in the Cornish town of Mount Polbearne and Polly Waterford couldn’t be happier. She’s in love with her seaside home, her Beach Street bakery and her boyfriend Huckle.

But the summer breeze hides an unsettling wind that is blowing through town and Polly is hiding a secret – one that could hurt her friend Selina who is recently widowed and who has come to the town to recover.

Polly bakes and takes out her unease on the bread she kneads but is there a storm about to hit Mount Polbearne?

Travel Guide

Although Mount Polbearne is fictional, you will be pleased to know that it is heavily inspired by  the very real and the very stunning St Michael’s Mount

Jenny Colgan loves Cornwall and it shows. Her settings might originate from her imagination but they are steeped in history and her childhood.

She used to say in old tin miners cottages near Polperro as a child and the days spent at Polperro beach still bring happy and vivid memories which goes to show that the beaches which feature heavily in her books as a whole have a real sense of place over time.

Cornwall is the setting of many gorgeous bakeries and cream tea establishments and we’re only sad to report that the beach street bakery is fictional. but its a good game to and try and find it.

Mousehole (pronounced Mousawl) and St Ives are good places to evoke Jenny’s novels too.

But its St Michael’s Mount which is evoked here and which is magical in it own right. From the old stone road which disappears under the waves as you cross to the island on the other side, the charm and atmosphere is outstanding.

It makes you think of Narnia, of happy places, of childhood innocence and the charm of Cornwall all in one.

Now to find an icecream and sit and stare out at sea for a while in the hope we’ll meet Polly some day..
