Alison Willlets may have survived an attack but she cannot move or communicate with the outside world. Police hunt this most sadistic of serial killers as this one is trying to let his victims live in this state wanting to show the power of the brain against the weakness of the body. Alison may be the killers’s only living victim but she can only lie, helpless whilst the man who put her there is still out there.

In the novel, Alison is one of the narrators, as is Thorne’s and the killer’s. But it’s the inside of Alison’s mind – her thoughts, fears of every waking moment that provide the most uncomfortable setting of all.
The investigation takes Thorne across London – from the halls and wards of the London hospitals to the dark streets and parks to meet people who might be able to help, and the streets in Lavender Hill, Camden High Road and the local and dilapidated police station on the Edgeware Road are Thorne’s landmarks – this is his patch and women are not safe in it with this sadistic killer on the loose.
