What you need to know before your trail

Bristol Harbour, one sunny April lunchtime

Police diver Flea Marley makes a gruesome discovery of a human hand. Just a hand – no body. And the very next day the matching hand is found. Both amputated whilst the victim was still alive

DI Jack Caffery is newly seconded to the Major Crime Investigation Unit in Bristol. He and Flea soon establish that the hands belong to a boy who has recently disappeared.

Their search takes them to the darkest and deepest recesses of Bristol’s underworld, where an unspeakable evil lurks…

Travel Guide

Bristol – the new home for Jack Caffery. Normally he would find the city and surrounding area a pleasant one, but then this is Mo Hayder’s Bristol so no luck there then.

Let’s take a quick tour of Hayder’s Bristol –

Turns out the trade has links to Africa which could become important and relevant to the case. For there, as could be the case here, life is cheap and drugs are king. The locations of the hands are important to a certain Muti religion which has been outlawed in African countries but in theory is still practiced. The hands are symbolic too…

Clifton Suspension Bridge

Another landmark in the city which is given the Hayder touch…

Nice areas of the city and landmarks at the centre of the investigation but you’ll not want to stay near the bridge for long…

Africa

African superstition in Bristol may make for an unusual setting and indeed it does but this and the drugs scene merge to create some of the darkest and chilling areas that will certainly not be on any Bristol Tourist trail.

And then there is the remote Kalahari desert and a small pool called Bushman’s hole. Boesmansgat. The path to hell
Where the paths of Bristol and the Kalahari converge …….
