What you need to know before your trail

Rose Pengelly’s father has been ruined – he has lost his boat yard and his fortune, plunging Rose and her mother into poverty and debt. There appears to be only one way out of their terrible circumstances; for Rose to marry Mr Tregellas, a powerful timber merchant and the man Rose believes is responsible for her father’s downfall. He has made his terms clear; either she marries him or faces homelessness and destitution. Desperate, Rose sets out to find evidence of Mr Tregellas’s wrongdoing. In her search, she encounters a mysterious young sailor called Jim, who refuses to disclose his identity. Even as she falls in love with him, she questions who he really is. He may help her restore her fortune and her good name, but does he ever tell her the truth?

Travel Guide

Cornwall by Nicola Pryce

Pengelly’s Daughter takes place in Fowey and Polruan on the south coast of Cornwall. I call the towns Fosse and Porthruan.

Rose Pengelly meets Jim by a tree in moonlight. They are on the cliff path above Polruan; he is being chased by men with dogs and tells Rose to run. The next morning her curiosity gets the better of her and she returns to the tree.

She and her mother live next to the dairy in Fore Street, Polruan. Before her Father’s bankruptcy, they lived in ‘Coombe House’ (a big house on the edge of the River Fowey where North Street meets Passage Street.) You can see the tree growing behind the house.

Sir James Polcarrow lives in the imposing stone mansion in the centre of Fowey (called Place House, but I call it Polcarrow.) You can see the top of the crenulated wall by the church along which Rose crawls in the fog.  Pengelly’s Yard is one of the warehouses with a slipway to the water’s edge.

Rose feels she cannot trust Thomas Warren and goes to the auction in the Ship Inn to watch him bid for the creek. The Ship Inn is on the corner of Lostwithiel Street.
