What you need to know before your trail

When aspiring travel writer Chloé Campbell is invited aboard a luxury airship flying to the North Pole, she thinks she’s bagged the opportunity of a lifetime.

But she hasn’t had long to admire the dazzling icy views before a fellow passenger is found dead in their cabin.

Trapped at the top of the world, the group agrees a tragic accident has occurred. But as the hours tick by, fear turns to doubt.

It seems everyone’s a suspect.

And it isn’t long before the passengers begin to turn on each other . . .

Travel Guide

Tromso

The city centre contains the highest number of old wooden houses in Northern Norway, the oldest dating from 1789.

Longyearbyen

A few highlights for your tour of this book:

Barentz Gastropub, Longyearbyen

With a sign beside the door declaring it the world’s northernmost pub, I had to make sure Chloé visited Barentz while in Longyearbyen. It’s here that Ben takes her after collecting her from the airport at the beginning of the book, and where he briefs her on the companions with whom they’ll soon by flying over the North Pole…

Café Huskies, Longyearbyen

Described in Chloé’s blog, Café Huskies is a local hotspot in Longyearbyen. With a wide selection of hot chocolates to choose from and huskies to cuddle, I popped in every day during my week-long research trip. And of course, Chloé can’t resist the opportunity to visit before boarding the Osprey.

Svalbard Brewery, Longyearbyen

With all of the food and drink aboard the Osprey so carefully sourced, the pilsner that Devon and Jasper drink at the on-board bar could only have come from the Svalbard Brewery. Located on the edge of Longyearbyen, it holds the impressive title of the world’s northernmost brewery.

North Pole Expedition Museum, Longyearbyen

Charting the history of the iconic Norge, the first airship to reach the Pole in 1926, Chloé glimpses the North Pole Expedition Museum as she is taken to board the Osprey. In the interest of conducting further research for her magazine feature, she plans to visit before heading home. That is, of course, once she and her fellow passengers have all been safely returned to Longyearbyen…

Booktrailer Review

I do like this Agatha Christie style thrillers that Tom Hindle seems so good at. This was my favourite so far as the setting was just so unique. I have never been on an air balloon before. Having said that, after reading this book, I am very unlikely to be on one any time soon. I felt trapped and claustrophobic just reading the book.

Very nicely done and the evocation of setting is just something else. Very exciting to head to Norway and board this first voyage. When the problems start to happen, and the turbulence – dear goodness – that was a bit realistic – it felt so realistic.

Tom writes clearly and the story flows very well but I feel in this one, the story, characters and Tom’s unique style really came together brilliantly.

And an air balloon – fantastic idea!
