2007: There’s one body in the cemetery that shouldn’t be there…
A man’s hooded and tortured body is found in a cemetery in Copenhagen during a riot. With so many police on site, how could anyone be murdered and left out in the open?
Unless the killer is one of them?
DCI Steen is assigned the case, which rapidly becomes more complex and more personal as the body count goes up. He will not stop until the killer is caught, whatever the consequences. But the consequences turn out to be greater than expected – especially for Axel himself.
Axel Steen is the only police officer of any description who lives in Copenhagen’s troubled district of Norrebro. It’s an area of mixed families, single people, immigrants and locals. It’s also home to the troubled Youth House in the novel. A place where tensions are high and where there really were a series of riots with locals and the police.
In the novel, the chasm between the areas of the city, both monetarily and structurally are well evoked. There’s the riots, police heavy handedness, molotov cocktails and a scary series of events. The iconic Assistens Cemetery is at the heart of this area, and is where a body is found. A man, dressed as a autonomist has been posed sitting against the wall of the cemetery. There’s a balaclava over his head.
The novel is a slower pace of Scandi Noir than other books – it looks at immigration, police corruption, the drug trade, trafficking and more.
