2000s: The Thursday Murder Club has another case to solve…

  • ISBN: 978-0241425428
  • Genre: Cosy crime

What you need to know before your trail

It’s the following Thursday.

Elizabeth has received a letter from an old colleague, a man with whom she has a long history. He’s made a big mistake, and he needs her help. His story involves stolen diamonds, a violent mobster, and a very real threat to his life.

As bodies start piling up, Elizabeth enlists Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron in the hunt for a ruthless murderer. And if they find the diamonds too? Well, wouldn’t that be a bonus?

But this time they are up against an enemy who wouldn’t bat an eyelid at knocking off four septuagenarians. Can The Thursday Murder Club find the killer (and the diamonds) before the killer finds them?

Travel Guide

Life in a retirement village in Kent

There’s not much in terms of real locations here but that doesn’t matter as it could be anywhere and that’s part of the charm. These older people in this retirement home might actually exist in one or more homes up and down the UK.

It’s definitely the UK as it’s SO British in writing and how the characters act and speak.  Elizabeth Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron meet up once a week on a,,,,em,,, Thursday and try and solve a crime. One minute there’s talking murder and the next discussing the benefits of one biscuit over another. If this is what life can be like when you’re in your eighties then it’ll be great!

Booktrailer Review

What a pleasure to be back at Coopers Chase retirement home. This is the second book from this author and the first was a runaway sensation. I think this is going to follow as quite frankly, it’s very funny and perhaps even funnier than book one. This has Richard Osman’s dry sense of humour imbued on every page.

This time the old timers with more than a few secrets between them are involved with the mafia and millions of pounds worth of diamonds. The book started with a bang and hits the ground running. What a delight to be back with such good literary friends. And that, I think, is the genius of this second book. We are so familiar with them now and it was a real joy to return and sit with them. Well, you don’t get to sit around in this retirement home as there is so much going on!

The crimes in this novel aren’t just the big ones mentioned above. Ione of the residents gets his phone stolen. Enter local Fairhaven cops, DCI Chris Hudson and Donna De Freitas with so much on their plate!

There’s a real charm about this book and it’s the mix of serious and comical. The crimes an danger feel real but so too do the people solving them. It was clever how the diamond caper came to be and the link to the TMC itself. Elizabeth from the home finds out hat her ex husband and spy has stolen them and now has the New York mafia after him. Enter the TMC to help out Are the a match for the mafia. Let’s just put it this way  – the mafia isn’t going to know what’s hit them.

This all  might sound implausible but it’s really not! No one puts the TMC residents in the corner! Underestimate them at your peril.

A fun second episode in the series. Please get this on the telly. OR at least get the characters on Pointless (the author presents this tea time quiz I the UK). Now that would be a TV/book mash up I would like to see!
