What you need to know before your trail

A man who has been attacked by ostrich rustlers is the latest case to come across the desk of Precious Ramotswe. Problems are arising at Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors and we meet a Hoopoe. What is a hoopoe we hear you ask? Well, it’s a joy to find out…

Despite all this, it’s nothing compared to the new competition that has just arrive on Precious’ doorstep – a new detective agency no less.

Travel Guide

A new detective agency opens up  in the area and is called the Satisfaction Guaranteed Detective Agency. It’s slogan? Don’t Take any Chances! Entrust your enquiries to a man! Well, if you know the characters and Precious in particular by now, you can see the expression on her face when she finds out and what she’s going to say!

Mma Makutsi starts a new business – the Typing school of the title and we get to go to an Ostrich farm. There’s a lot of new surroundings to explore but it’s the people that come across the Detective Agency that are the most interesting. The setting up of the typing school too reveals the Botswana humour – . they seek out to use the church hall for the classes –

The Minister was amenable…

‘There will be many sinners wishing to learn to type, he said.”

Botswana again is the star of the show  – there’s the garage, the bush, the cattle and of course the landscape and sky all evoked with such a warm lilting voice of Precious and her friends.

“I must remember, thought Mma Ramotswe, how fortunate I am in this life; that every moment, but especially now, sitting on the verandah of my house in Zebra Drive, and looking up at the hight sky of Botswana, so empty that the blue is almost white.”
