The town in the novel is fictional – Midtown on Sea – but it’s clearly in Essex and is a beachside location so there’s plenty of places it could be!
The author has set the book where she is from and so pays homage to her home region – but as you read, you will see why this needed a fictional setting. The story could and some of it sadly has happened up and down the country so it’s a universal story.
Essex is a lovely county however so a visit is recommended and you might find yourself in Midtown….
