Northern France
the locations are vague and there are no specifics to where this village or farm might be so the map illustrates the key sites associated with WW1 memorials and battlefields.
This novel could have and probably did happen across France. Families who decided to hide those running from the German army. Families having to give up their homes or share them with the German enemy. when both happens to one family at the same time…
This is a poignant and heart breaking novel that really hits home the horrors and confusion of war. Reminds you that the lines between occupier and enemy were extremely blurred at times.
My heart was wrenched out of my throat during this novel. What must it have been like to have had to allow German soldiers to live with you during war time. Would I have been brave enough to also hide a pilot they thought was MIA? So many emotional pulls and questions to consider here that I was honestly torn reading this. I thought the lines would have been black and white….but there are various shades in between. A skilled author takes you there and makes you care for both sides!
Extremely atmospheric and wonderfully written.
