What you need to know before your trail

When a young Josie Masters sees a boy wearing a red football shirt, Dylan Jones, being taken by a clown at a carnival, she tries to alert the crowds. But it’s too late. Dylan has disappeared…

Thirty years later, Josie is working as a police officer in Bath. The remains of the body of a child have been found – complete with tatters of a torn red football shirt. Is it the boy she saw vanish in the clutches of the clown? Or is it someone else altogether?

And then another child disappears…

Travel Guide

Oxford

Largely set in and around Oxford. If  you see a fairground or any clowns at all…beware!

The Port Meadows area of the city is the area of interest in the novel and so too is the town just outside of Oxford called Yarnton. It’s not clear where the circus and funfair is held, but if you see or hear one…

The city of Oxford is where Josie Masters returns to investigate the case which could be linked to the one she was witness to as a child. She’s considering a move from her current home in Bath but is not sure about whether to come to the city known for its “Dreaming spires” as she admits it feels claustrophobic to her.

The fairground

The fairground is a happy and exciting time for children. A clown holding a child’s hand is not out of place, expected even. This  novel evokes the sights, smells and atmosphere of a day at the fairground but then the excitement turns into something dark and something very very disturbing. Then years later, bones are uncovered in a well – known beauty spot so once again, areas associated with an escape from the city, and full of fun are sullied..
