1908: A novel by two sisters based on the life of their great grandmother.
A young French woman meets a Spanish artist named Francis. Following a whirlwind romance, they marry and fall into a Paris that is experimenting with new ways of living and loving. This is the city of art, of experimentation and so much more. When they meet an artist, their lives become intertwined in ways none of them could have expected.
Francis Picabia
Francis Picabia was a French avant-garde painter, writer, filmmaker, magazine publisher, poet, and typographist closely associated with Dada.
Picabia painted in many styles and he is known for Impressionism and Pointillism. Later on, he became associated with Cubism.
A striking novel this one. A true account of the life of Gabriele of the title – the great grandmother on the fathers side of the authors. They write about her, and her relationship with real life painter Francis Picabia. This is the kind of story that you are captivated by. Someone who has lived history and met some of the most famous painters of their day. I learned so much about French art in this book.
What I loved most however, was the personal story. The love story, the story of pain and longing, the emotional tug – well this was just something else.
Throughout the book the authors leave comments as to what they thought of the situation unfolding in the text. A very interesting and beautiful way of telling a story. I felt honoured to be part of this story in more ways than one.
