Shortly before Christmas, Hanne Wilhelmsen, Chief Inspector of the Norwegian Police, is called to the scene of multiple murders. Four people are found shot dead at the home of the wealthy Stahlberg family: shipping merchants and notorious for family disputes and lawsuits. Three of the dead are members of the family, and the fourth victim is an undistinguished author, seemingly out of place. A bottle of champagne had been opened but not drunk. What was the cause for celebration?

Anne Holt’s Oslo is a very special kind of city. It’s Christmas time in this book but no festive cheer at all in the city. It does make for a very atmospheric read however but with stray dogs, prostitutes and robbery gone wrong, this is not your usual crime at Christmas read.
The rich family in the book worked in the shipping industry – now centered around the nice harbour in the city.

Art of Peder Balke is found in the rich house. He was a Norwegian painter. He is known for portraying the landscape of Norway in a romantic and dramatic manner. He was also active in the field of social justice.
Oslo Police
The police and legal team work from the police HQ in Gronlandsleiret 44 “which has no historical resonance unlike the previous building in Mollergata where the HQ used to be. The police seems to be bothered that their block is unlike the smart government buildings of Victoria Terrasse nearby”
Cases always seems to involve a conspiracy or two operating high up in the Oslo legal system and since Ms Holt was Norway’s Justice Minister, there is a keen sense of accuracy and realistic dialogue and other plot background within every book.
