After Brooklyn mob widow Rena Ruggiero hits her eighty-year-old neighbor Enzio in the head with an ashtray when he makes an unwanted move on her, she retreats to the Bronx home of her estranged daughter, Adrienne, and her granddaughter, Lucia, only to be turned away at the door.
Their neighbor, Lacey ‘Wolfie’ Wolfstein, a one-time Golden Age porn star and retired Florida Suncoast grifter, takes Rena in and befriends her.
When Lucia discovers that Adrienne is planning to hit the road with her ex-boyfriend, she figures Rena is her only way out of a life on the run with a mother she can’t stand. The stage is set for an explosion that will propel Rena, Wolfie, and Lucia down a strange path, each woman running from their demons, no matter what the cost.

Bensonhurst is a large, multi-ethnic neighborhood in the southwestern part of the New York City borough of Brooklyn, New York. The Bronx of course is another well-known and mixed area of the city and these two neighbourhoods are where the story unfolds.
This is the kind of Noir that could only be set in New York’s thriving neighbourhoods. These hoods of the city are where the mob families live and go about their business. But this is not the business of normal, law-abiding every day people of course. These people live parallel lives and it’s that parallel that really shines in this novel.
Normal neighbours such as Rena who is known for her church going ways. She knew her husband was involved with dodgy mob activities but now she is becoming part of that world too.
From the Bronx where Adrienne lives and Brooklyn where Rena lives, this is a visit to the NYC you don’t normally get to see. And spend time with people you don’t normally get to meet (danger free!)
