Florida and the Jim Crow laws
Segregation in Florida was enforced statewide by Jim Crow laws from 1865 until 1967. It dictated every aspect of public life from where Black residents could live, learn, travel, to where they could socialize.
Black populations were systematically confined to specific areas. In Miami, this included areas like Colored Town (now Overtown)
In extreme cases, racial segregation and inequality were enforced by violent mobs – Ocoee massacre in 1920 involved a white mob attack African-American residents in the northern parts of the region.
