2011- 2012: The retelling of King Lear set in modern day India …
Jivan Singh, the bastard scion of the Devraj family, returns to his childhood home after a long absence – only to witness the unexpected resignation of the ageing patriarch from the vast corporation he founded, the Devraj Company. On the same day, Sita, Devraj’s youngest daughter, absconds – refusing to submit to the marriage her father wants for her.
Meanwhile, Radha and Gargi, Sita’s older sisters, are handed the Company… And so begins a brutal, deathly struggle for power, ranging over the luxury hotels and spas of New Delhi and Amritsar, the Palaces and slums of Napurthala, to Srinagar, Kashmir.
Devraj Bapuji (Lear) – a rich and powerful magnate and owner of one of India’s biggest companies.
Devraj’s daughters – Gargi (Goneril), Radha (Regan) and Sita (Cordelia),
Devraj’s henchmen Ranjit (Gloucester) and Kritik (Kent),
Ranjit’s sons Jeet (Edgar) and Jivan (Edmund).
The family home and where Jivan returns to following his time in America
Bapuji is the son of a Maharaja from Kashmir and someone who lost his land. This farm symbolises the struggle to get by and the powerful exploiting the powerless.
Bapuji plans to build a luxury hotel in Srinagar. This is the city of palaces and luscious homes. But a gilded cage is still a cage. This also reveals the old fashioned and sexist laws around property and wealth.
Many people live in rich surroundings in Srinagar, but there are many more still living in absolute poverty.
