The author mentions in his author note that for reasons of atmosphere, the Patong in the novel is one pre-tsunami. Vulture Peak the mountain is fictional as is the Golden Goose Temple

They do sound grand though:

Patong, about two miles from Vulture Peak is the downmarket play area in Phuket. On the right nit, it;s a lot more festive than the Bangkok hotspot which tend to have a no frills air in comparison. Here, on Bang La, Patong’s main street, you get the full farang fantasy of unrestrained orientalism.
