The history and setting are evoked in very visceral terms:
Spy novels about the Cold War and the old enemy take you back to a whole other world and with the benefit of hindsight allow you to take part of sorts in world events. These are subjects and topics that were always in the news and so this imaging of further developments in the field take you right back to Cambridge and Russia at a pivotal time for one and takes you from the spires of Cambridge, across Europe to many different places before ending up in Russia – behind the iron curtain.
