Travel Guide

Cambridge and the Fens

The area of the fens in and around Cambridge was the setting for the inspiration behind the book. The author moved here with her husband who had got a job at the university. They were looking for a remote farmhouse but the area felt more remote than they had expected and the house was dilapidated and in desperate need of repair.

The Fens she says are flat an spooky and empty but without the beautiful of an estuarial landscape; in the Fens you are buried deep inland, and it is a curious mixture of empty nature and the manmade: grain silos, drainage ditches, and now, wind farms. It is unsettling and disorientation and so flat you can almost see the curvature of the earth.”

It was in the farmhouse they were initially interested in making an offer on, that most of the action takes place in. As the author adds ” if you walk out the backdoor a vast and eerie landscape will dwarf and menace you”
