It’s the end of the olive harvest and people are expecting the end of harvest feast that signals the end of everyone’s hard work.

Everyone including Hermes Diaktoros who arrives expecting food and wine and not much else.

However as the bonfire blazes, a few young men decide to dare each other and leap the flames. Tragically one is horribly burned and worse still, it is not certain whether he fell or he was pushed. On top of this, Hermes learns about a deep-running feud between two families, and one of their patriarchs has just died…

It may be the end of the olive season but it appears to be the start of a more bloody and dangerous time…

This book is one of the Seven Deadly sins mystery series

Travel Guide

Kalmata

Hermes is the man from Athens who comes to investigate one of the seven deadly sins and his arrival in Kalmata is to deal with that of gluttony.

All of the clues to the mystery are woven into the fabric of Greek village life. Hermes is of course the Greek God like figure who comes to dole out justice and to visit the people

The village of Papayiannis

“Below them the church’s domes and arches straddled age-melowed stone walls…”
The  hot work on the hillsides:
“The Papayiannis men checked their watches counting down the remaining minutes as they passed round the ouzo bottle…”

Dendra is a place with a lot of history too:

“In ages past, the ancient citadel was a formidable defence against enemies from the sea”

The entire landscape is one of rocky hillsides, hight mountains, gusting winds and settlements connected by a sparse network of roads.

Of course there’s the food too:

Aubergine pilaf, made in a tapsi, rice flavoured with cloves and a loaf of  cheese bread.

Murder can be a hungry business
