However the peace on the reserve doesn’t last long for a visitor comes to the house and tells Martine and her grandmother that their home is going to be repossessed.

What can she do to help her grandmother and save their home? She’s grown to love everything about  it and can’t bear to leave. Then she discovers that a unique herd of Namibian elephants may hold the key.

Travel Guide

Sawubona Game Reserve near Cape Town in South Africa is the beloved home and playground of Martine. She first came to this place as an orphan to come and live with the grandmother  and at first it was strange and isolating but now she has made friends with all the animals and has even tamed a white giraffe named Jemmy who she rides around on.

Now Jemmy risks becoming the star attraction of the zoo that developers plan to build on the land when they sell the game reserve from under Martine’s grandmother’s feet. When the grandmother tries to find help by returning to England, Martine and her friend Ben go to Namibia as they’ve heard a prophecy that ‘elephants will lead you to the truth’

Namibia is indeed the home of these magnificent creatures – intelligent and graceful despite their size, they lives in a whole community of elephants and can sense panic and fear from far away. Much like Martine in this story who learns to understand them more closely.

“A female elephant as vast as a baobab tree was standing in the shadows of the forest, flapping her ears menacingly. She let out a deafening trumpet”

It’s quite a journey getting there – what with stowing away on a aeroplane and getting stuck in the desert. The elephants they find are being kept in a kind of prison. Meeting an elephant whisperer, Martine starts to understand these creatures more and to see how both of their destinies are intertwined.

This story will make you marvel at how clever and insightful elephants are, that they can swim hundreds of miles, hear distress from miles away and always look out for one another.
Martine has always known she has a gift with animals but here she finds out more about what this will mean and where it will take her in life.
