What you need to know before your trail

A remarkable novel about a remarkable but little known true horrific story outside of Mexico

Since 1993 over 500 women have been murdered in Ciudad Juárez. Residents believe the true number of disappeared stands at 5,000.

Kelly Courter is a jaded, worn-out boxer. The one good thing in his life is his girlfriend Paloma – a volunteer at an organisation trying to get justice for the hundreds of women who have disappeared in Juarez in recent years.

Many of these disappeared have been found murdered if they have been found at all. Kelly and Paloma feel, as the reader will, the utter poverty and utter despair and brutal nature of the city.

Danger lurks right around the corner. So just who will try and work out what is going on??

Travel Guide

The story of the dead and missing women of Ciudad Juárez is an issue that should be better highlighted and understood. The truth behind this fictional thriller is the real issue and to have it in a novel highlights it well. Short and snappy chapters seem to echo and enhance the quick raw rapid sequence of events.

This is a very visceral crime novel based on the true story of the mass murders of women which occur in a Mexican border town of Ciudad Juárez. A reality that is made all the more accessible due to the two main characters – a washed up boxer and an old cop who both have their own reasons for seeking out the truth. As they move in and around the city, they meet all kinds of people and visit the underbelly of the city that no -one not even the police ever want to see .

When reading this, it’s important to remember that this is based on fact and that the crimes which occur here are not just crimes against women, against people but the families and friends left behind as well as on Mexican society as a whole.

This is a dark dark view of Ciudad Juárez
