A mummified body is found bound with tape and then discarded in a bag of rubbish. Detective Superintendent Jeannette Kihlberg takes charge of the case and is assisted by colleague Jens Hurtig.

The case is not going to be easy however as they have to battle an apathetic prosecutor and a bureaucratic police force unwilling to devote resources to solving the murder of a nameless immigrant child.

However when they discover two more children’s bodies, their opinions change and they approach therapist Sofia Zetterlund for her expertise in psychopathic perpetrators

Can they discover and ultimately stop the person who is responsible for some of the hellishly insidious evil woven deep into Swedish society?

And then there’s the possibility of revenge will follow…

Travel Guide

“I just wanted to let you know there’s a dead boy in the bushes near Thorildsplan”

From this dramatic opening the investigation starts with aplomb. Mariatorget is where Sofia Zetterlund’s office is:

“Towards the end of the blood-soaked eighteenth century, King Adolf Fredrik lent his name to the square now known as Mariatorg”

Many of this ancient murders took place not far from her very office. So even before she starts on her investigation into the most recent one, this place has form. There is history here it would seem but as the novel progresses from one bloody scene to the next, it seems as if most of Stockholm’s streets could have bloody printer or footsteps on them.

The latest newspaper headline:

Macabre find in Central Stockholm and mummy found in bushes.

This is one trip around Stockholm and parts of Sweden that you will never forget. A few sejours take you back to Denmark and the start of things but Stockholm will stick in your mind as the brutal and unforgiving backdrop for the most shocking Scandi thriller for a long time.
